What kind of transmission fluid do I need? Ok, I have a 98 Accord with a 5 speed manual. My Chilton manual says to use Honda Manual Transmission fluid. The transmission has 120,000 miles on it, and I would like to put some good synthetic fluid in it. Can I start using Royal Purple in it or should I just find some Honda MTF? Any other recommendations, Honda guys?

itsheidiyo replied: "royal purple is not as great as everyone claims it to be, it actually puts premature wear into parts before they would be wearing out. If you really want to use synthetic, I would use GM synchro mesh, motul, or redline. Honda OEM fluid is good too though. Hope that helps. =]"

obracer12 replied: "well in a manual trans its not fluid persay more so oil... but I would go with OEM honda... I assume you have no modifications to your trans like an LSD or gear altering so regular OEM would be your best bet... bite the bullet and pay for it at honda royal purple fluids are meant for cars that are in extreme conditions for short amount of times IE drag,drift,auto-x.. that kind of thing where right after the fluid is changed otherwise it causes slight damage due to high viscosity hope this helps"

shorty916 replied: "you use the same oil you use for the motor i am pretty sure."

Sang K replied: "Honda MTF. Honda transmission requires additional additive that other fluids would not provide. If you put any other fluid in (redline, royal purple, mobile 1,...) you first develop excessive gear noise, then trash your transmission in about 50K miles. Chilton manual is correct. You should use ONLY Honda MTF fluid. You will find the same statement in Helms manual (Dealer manual) There is no purpose of using anything else because with Honda MTF, the transmission will outlast the life of the car and there isn't any performance gain using synthetic transmission fluid."

99 honda prelude transmission problems? I have a 99 lude base and the problems are when the engine is cold I can shift fine into all gears but .... engine get to operating temp I can't shift into any gears at all !!! only way to get into gear is that i have to kill the engine and than i can engage into gear.... I have replaced the clutch and throw out bearing, and the clutch slave cyl. use honda mtf 2.5 qts in it. not sure what's going on this is not my first time I'd changed a clutch done many on honda's but this one got me confused lol see what you guys think about this one Thanks

droopy253 replied: "You need a new tranny. The SNYCO rings are usually the part that goes out and doesnt let the gears shift smoothly or not at all. Its better to get a used tranny then to rebuld it costs around $2000 to rebuild a tranny."

Scott replied: "Also no honda front wheel drive manual uses more then 1.5qts of fluid."

d17a1civic replied: "get a used tranny and swap it in and then tear apart your old one and work on it if you want to sell it. thats really the best option. oh, and honda manual fwd trannys use more than 1.5 qts. my 7thgen uses 1.9. so wherever you got that number, is wrong. i know ek's use 1.6 qts also."
