Any suggestions for a 1998 Ford Taurus egr valve code that will not go out? I have tried everything I can think of and still stuck with this problem. The check engine light will not go out and is showing a code for "insufficient egr value flow". Not to mention when driving with foot barely on the pedal the car acts as if there is water in the fuel. If I demand anything from the engine it takes off without any problem. Engine idols fine and smooth. Egr valve, wire, spark plugs, all filters all have been replaced. The water in the gas tank feeling is especially bad when there is high humidity or raining. I Have checked coil and no burnt areas showing possibly arching from any crack. I assume the slight hesitation under little demand is related to the egr issue. Mechanic has shut it off several times but comes right back on a short time later. Any help would be appreciated! I copied and printed your suggestions to take to the mechanic as the next step is solving this thanks a ton. Do you also believe the slight hesitation is related to the egr issue? One mechanic suggested it sounds like the diaphram inside the value is fluttering, does that sound right?

Pumper Tech replied: "There is also a DPFE sensor to measure the flow of the egr valve. To properly diagnose you need a scan tool. Possible causes, Bad dpfe sensor 80%, bad egr solenoid 10%, plugged egr passages 6%, plugged or broken hose to egr valve or plugged hoses to dpfe sensor 3%, defective pcm 1%. Take your pick."

acmeroadrunner2003 replied: "It is a good possibility that your EGR passages are blocked. Take off the vaccuum hose to the EGR and use a hand vaccuum pump to open the EGR valve while the engine is idling. Because the EGR valve is new the engine should stall unless the EGR passages are clogged. The DPFE sensors on Fords go bad all the time. The way to check that is to watch the DPFE voltage on a scan tool while you open the EGR valve with a vaccuum pump. If the idle changes but the DPFE sensor voltage doesn't move you know the sensor is bad. If the idle doesn't change you will have to clean the EGR passages and then retest the sensor. The hoses to the sensor also deteriorate. As far as the car running poorly it is probably because the car has to adjust the air fuel mixture. While the EGR valve was not working the engine was probably running rich. If the EGR valve is working at all it is allowing more air in so the air fuel mixture may be a little leaner until the PCM adjusts the mixture."

Wondering the value of a Dale Jarret Diecast? I got a Dale Jarret diecast #88 Quality Care/Batman 1998 Ford Taurus limited edition w249801041-3 in mint condition minus the box a little beat up. 1:24 i meant the box is a lil beat up the car is perfect shape i've had for nine or ten yrs

Kelly replied: "Uh, "minus the box and a little beat up" and "mint condition" are not the same thing. What size is this car? What brand? Honestly, it's probably not worth much. Few of those little diecasts are."

timing cover leak on Taurus 98? i have a Ford Taurus 1998 with an oil leak. (3.0 DO-HC engine) Garage says it's leaking from the timing cover and that's it's like a 10 hour job. they also told me that they are not that interested in doing it. Is it the time it's supposed to take to change the gasket on the timing cover ( in know you have to get the engine off the car first and put it back after) or did they inflate it to make it not worth it (blue book value is under $1000.) I currently let it leak and add oil (it's dripping a few drop every day so i could live with it. i don't like that it drips on the exhaust which makes a bad smell. Is there a risk of the oil catching fire ? Thanks for advice.

AltarEgo replied: "1. You don't have to completely remove the engine, but partially remove it to change the cover. It's a pretty serious job. 2. It's not worth it 3. The leak can start a fire, but not too likely 4. The DOHC has serious problems with the cam sprockets and can blow up the motor (it's an interference motor). That's a whole other issue! 5. Try to sell it. Play dumb. Use the money for a better car"

don r replied: "Oil leaking into the timing cover is fatal to rubber timing belts- I hope your car has a chain istead of a belt. If they say 10 hours to do it, that sounds like a nightmare. If oil leaks onto the exhaust manifold it could catch fire and you'll get paid by your insurance for the loss- that may be a blessing in disguise. The $1000 labor, and whatever other parts need replacing should help you decide to fix it or let the death-clock run down on it. Call another shop and see if they need a parts car."

AJ replied: "Altar to correct your point. The only problems that that cam sprockets had failed was in he 3.4 V8 SHO models. The Duratec cams were completely fine and there wasn't a class action filed against Duratec."
